Launched in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain extension is the single TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to order john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level names remained running.
